Sales
The Heart Of Business
In our current society, money rules the world. Without it our governments would fail, our economies would collapse, and our commerce would come to a screeching halt. Our American economy is a delicate industrial ecosystem with many moving parts that keep things running smoothly. Possibly the most important of which, is money. Commerce is created through a constant in-flow and distribution of money. While this system has been well established for more than 150 years, it had a starting point. That grand start of the economic beast we see today, was sales.
I like to think of sales as the heart of any company. In this analogy, money is the blood of business, a constant flow is needed to keep things running. Yet, without a heart, there’s nothing to keep the blood flowing through the system. That’s where sales comes in. The idea of selling things has been around for thousands of years, from merchants in ancient civilizations, to trade markets established all throughout the world. Selling has been an integral part of society for generations. In our modern world, selling takes its most recognizable form in the business arena. Every company that wants to thrive needs a team of people devoted to representing and selling their product or service. A company with a good sales team can grow exponentially and increase their capital with ease. While a company burdened by a bad sales team will usually be short lived and eventually fail. Just like if your heart isn't properly pumping blood through your body, it can be lethal. A sales team that doesn't pump enough money through your business can be detrimental.
Unfortunately, sales is not an easy role to fill in the modern work environment. In an interview I conducted with salesman Adam Litteral, he explained to me how you have to learn to deal with rejection, whether that's over the phone, through email, or in person. Not everyone you contact is going to be interested in your product, and many might show interest at first but then decide that it isn't right for them in the long run. Not only this but sales can be a very stressful and anxiety inducing job. Mr. Litteral spoke about how it takes a lot of practice and experience to get used to trying to sell anything. The idea of speaking to strangers and trying to convince them that the product you represent is worth their time can be very difficult. Overall sales is a hard job to do well, and requires a lot of patience and practice.
Like I mentioned earlier, money rules the world, and as you’d expect, money will determine the fate of any business that wishes to grow. This is why sales are vital to the health of a company. Without people getting out there and making the connections needed to sell your product, your business can’t possibly succeed. On the flip side, if you have a team of people who are devoted to the success of your company, wholeheartedly get behind your product, and keep on going despite the rejection they will face along the way. You can almost guarantee to see growth and success. It certainly isn’t an easy role, but I believe it to be one of, if not the most important part of modern commerce. This is why sales is such a valuable role in the workforce.
